ACI RACE 2025 Conference Kicks Off in Dalaman

Europe’s regional airports and industry partners convened today in Dalaman at the ACI EUROPE 16th Regional Airports Conference and Exhibition, hosted by YDA Dalaman Airport. The event highlighted the economic and political challenges faced by regional airports, with ACI EUROPE emphasizing that overcoming these obstacles is crucial for Europe’s cohesion and competitiveness.

New Traffic Realities and Competitive Pressures

While major regional airports have seen an 11.7% increase in passenger traffic since the pandemic, smaller airports have experienced a sharp 35.1% decline. Airports located in tourism-driven regions gained an edge, whereas those reliant on business travel suffered setbacks. The selective growth strategies of Ultra Low-Cost Carriers (LCCs) and the hub-focused operations of Full Service Carriers (FSCs) have further widened the gap between airports.

Torino Airport CEO Andorno: Pressures Are Increasing

Andrea Andorno, CEO of Torino Airport, stated that regional airports are becoming increasingly dependent on Ultra Low-Cost Carriers, a trend that is placing growing pressure on their operations.

ACI EUROPE: Political Support Is Essential

Olivier Jankovec, Director General of ACI EUROPE, warned that the future of small regional airports is under serious threat. He projected that passenger traffic could decline by up to 20% by 2050.
To address this, ACI EUROPE proposed four key actions:

Continuation of operating aid beyond 2027

EU-supported investments in sustainable transport,

Elimination of national aviation taxes,

Preservation and expansion of Open Skies agreements.

Jankovec also called on Türkiye to provide more liberal access for foreign airlines and to ensure that airport charges reflect actual costs.

YDA Dalaman CEO Laçin: Regional Airports Are Strategically Important

Yiğit Laçin, CEO of YDA Dalaman Airport, emphasized the vital role regional airports play in Türkiye’s economy, tourism, and employment. He pointed out that high operating costs and connectivity limitations pose significant challenges for these airports, and stressed the critical importance of targeted public support.
